As we come out of 2019 and into a brand new decade, it’s tempting to give your home some TLC and spruce up your interiors. When making decisions about the direction you want to follow, regardless of whether you’re a trend-follower or trend-ignorer, it can be a tough task to know what will work in the long run.
In this article, we’ll be looking at some of the upcoming trends for 2020, how you can incorporate them into your home and some tips and tricks on making sure that your new interior design will keep you smiling all year round.

Be Organised and Pre-Plan

When embracing a change, it can be tempting to jump in with two feet, without much regard for how you’ll feel about the new design in the long run, for this reason, patience is key. As much as we’d all love to change our interiors with the seasons, in reality, that can be very stressful, not to mention costly and time-consuming! This means that your newly designed interior should stand the test of time, with the end result being somewhere you enjoy living in.
We’d suggest gathering ideas and either writing them down, creating a Pinterest board or printing out examples and hanging them on a physical mood board. This way, you can keep coming back to your initial ideas over the course of a couple of weeks, to see how you feel about them each day. Looking at the pictures and notes when you’re happy, sad, stressed or tired will likely evoke different internal responses, and really you only want to incorporate designs and styles that consistently bring a positive reaction to you.

2020 Interior Trends

At this stage, there’s very little concrete evidence on what we’ll see come into our interiors over the next 12 months. But, with the help of previews of new collections from brands such as Habitat, M&S and John Lewis, we can get a taste of what may be coming our way.

Abstract

If you want to be bold in 2020, then this trend is perfect for you! The abstract design trend will be making an appearance in the New Year, with powerful geometric shapes, hand-drawn sketches and playful blocks of colour. We’ve already seen Marks & Spencer, Debenhams and Furniture Village embrace this design in their new season collections, and we expect it to play a big part over the next 12 months.

The abstract design is all about showcasing your personality and flair through your choice of design and colours. As this trend originates from flat designs on canvas, it is best kept that way when bringing it into our homes. Think cushions, bedsheets and rugs that are flat when we look at them. You can also pair with abstract artwork for a full-frontal embrace with the style.

Structured Simplicity

Taking much of the inspiration from the Nordic Retreat trend that has been oh-so-popular in 2019, this is expected to be an extremely viable option for 2020. If bold colours really aren’t your style and you much prefer to spend time in calm and cosy spaces, then you may have met your match. Although this style will look equally at home in any room, it works best in living areas, such as bedrooms or living rooms.

This design would really fit people who are looking to invest in quality, rather than quick fixes for their homes. Items that have been hand-crafted, typically from organic, raw materials work well in this kind of interior, such as bare wooden furniture, metal industrial ceiling lights or woolen throws and cushions. Textures will play an important part in this style, taking the place of bold colours. When crafting your ultimate neutral-inspired interior, you’ll want to move away from greys and embrace the new trend of neutral colours. These include yellow-based neutrals, such as beige, oatmeal and Dulux’s Colour of the Year, Tranquil Dawn.

Bring the outdoors, indoors

Who doesn’t want a little of the outdoors inside their home? Being in nature gives us such a revitalizing and calming feeling, so why not incorporate it in out homes? That sounds tempting, right? Natural light is essential when you’re trying to create this outdoors-inspired space, so try to throw as much natural light into the room as possible. If your rooms don't have enough windows you can look into glass roofs. These not only look modern, but they also light up the room completely giving you the feeling that you are outside.

Japandi

This Asian-inspired style has been bubbling under the surface for a little while now and 2020 could (and should) be the year that it takes center stage. During the first part of 2020, this design could really be something to embrace, using rich silk textures, oriental-style prints and artwork, and bird motifs on soft furnishings.

The style also incorporates elements of the much-loved Scandinavian interior design, pairing the oriental themes with the rustic simplicity that we have come to know and love with the Scandinavian style. If your home is a space that’s bursting full of decoration and nik-naks, perhaps this one may not be for you, as it encourages simplicity and a ‘less is more’ approach to living areas.

This style can work with any room size, bringing air and space to even small spaces by reducing clutter and placing focus on just a handful of decorative items. Wooden colours and neutral tones are your best bet with this interior style, with some darker colours in places to bring depth.

Something to Consider

Whichever trend you choose to embrace or avoid, or even if you decide to carve out your own particular niche, remember that texture can be just as important as colour. Using textures like bouclé when it comes to soft furnishings can bring a previously flat interior into the third dimension, while incorporating plants, accessories, and textured artwork can liven up the surrounding space brilliantly.
