How to Get Rid of Shyness

Shyness can be an awkward ordeal that inhibits socializing, fun, and interpersonal relationships, which feeds back on itself and deepens the shyness, and so on and so forth, creating a vicious feedback loop that can be incredibly difficult to shake loose from. Though it may seem daunting, here are a few good ways to get rid of your shyness today.

Shyness is a problem that everyone deals with from time to time. Though it is different for everybody in different situations, shyness essentially stems from the same root in the human psyche and manifests itself in similar ways, no matter who the person is or the situation they find themselves in.

GET OUT OF THE HOUSE
The quickest way to get you on the path away from shyness and get you out of your shell is to get yourself comfortable with the idea of meeting people and making small talk. With repeated experience, you will develop social skills and stop your shyness.

Go to a bar, or a bookstore, or a park, and try to meet people. It will be awkward at first, but if you try to power through it and get comfortable with the simple act of meeting people, you will go a long way toward curbing your shyness.

RELAX
Just try to relax and get your mind off of your anxieties. Stop the process in your head where you continually tell yourself that everyone is noticing and judging your every mistake. Truth is, most everyone else in the room is focused on themselves, not you. Take some deep, calming breaths and get out there.

FIND A SOCIAL CLUB
Finding a club or organization that is geared toward one of your interests or a favorite hobby is a great way to help you get over shyness by focusing on a topic that you love and you know everyone else in the room does as well. Look in the newspapers, online, or at the bulletin board of the local library to find a group you would be interested in joining.

MAKE A LIST
Pull out a notepad and make a list of all of your positive attributes, and of all of the things you do well. Focus on this list, and repeat each and every one of these to yourself over and over again to help build self-confidence and shift your thinking away from negative-based thoughts to a more positive outlook. When in a situation where you feel shyness hindering you, think back to the list and repeat to yourself some of the things you do well.
