Ever since we welcomed our second daughter, I kind of said goodbye to a good night's sleep. I’m pretty sure many parents can relate. The truth is, we underestimate the power of good night rest and we tend to say that it’s ok, we’ll make it through the day even if we’re not completely rested, but is that true?

Of course not! It’s a fact that not getting enough sleep can affect your mood, your health and your weight. Studies have shown that people who get the appropriate amount of sleep on a daily basis tend to live longer and have healthier lives. If you don’t believe that, just ask my husband! If I don’t manage to get a good night's sleep, nothing will make my day get better, not even that yummy cup of coffee that I like to have in the morning. I don’t know about you, but when I don’t get enough sleep, it’s very hard for me to think straight. Everything seems confusing and I just can’t seem to get around. One of the great benefits of sleep is that it allows our brain to process and acknowledge the new experiences, increasing our understanding and retention capacity.

Another point that I can relate to. Sleep regulates the hormones that control the appetite and studies have shown that if you don’t get enough rest the normal hormone balances are interrupted and your appetite increases. Then your body will want to stock up on food high in calories.

I also have a few tips that might help you get a good night sleep:


  • Keep your bedroom dark and cool. The lower the temperature, the better you will sleep.
  • Try not to eat at least 2 hours before you go to bed.
  • Establish a bedtime routine that you enjoy and that will relax you.
