5 ways to start your career change

Some people know exactly what they want to do. They may want to be a doctor or a nurse. They may want to fly planes or defend their country. Some people know what they want and some people don’t. This often means that they tend to fall into a career to get by while they decide what they want to do. This job that was supposed to be temporary becomes permanent. Are you now in that position? In a job that you hate and are just doing it for the wage?

Life is too short to live to work and really you should be working to live. So maybe now is the time to get serious about that career change you have always wanted to make. But where do you start? I wanted to share with you some of the things to consider and the things you can do to make this dream become your reality. You don’t have to put up with something you no longer want to do, but you do need the courage to make it happen.

Think about what you want to do

One of the first things you need to do is invest in some time to think about what you want to do with your life. What are you interested in? What makes you feel good? These are the questions to ask yourself. Maybe you have realized that you know what you want to do, but you just don’t know how to do it. Maybe you know the career path you want to take. It is so important to really consider your choices and your options, as this allows you to make better decisions about how you are going to make it happen for the future.

Start to work on your resume

Once you know what you want to do, now the fun can begin to help make it a reality. The biggest place to start would be your resume. Now would be the ideal time to start thinking about making some changes to it. When was the last time it was updated? Do you have all of your skills and experience on there? Take time to really work on your resume and do some research on the best layout and creating the best first impression you can. If you know what you want to do, you can tailor your experience and skills to match the job you want. Don’t be afraid to be specific. There are plenty of tips online that can help you create the ideal document.

Why not study and change career direction?

Is it time to start thinking about what skills you actually have? When people have dreams of changing their careers or the jobs they have, they sometimes need to have new qualifications or skills in place in order to even be looked at for an interview. To take things seriously, you may need to consider that you might have to start studying in your spare time. You might also want to take the time to think about having a career break and going back to study full time. This may be a tough time, but it could help you get to where you want to be faster.

Seek out great opportunities

You don’t get anything in life sometimes if you don’t seek it out yourself, and job opportunities can be the same. Many companies don’t advertise certain roles, or they have a list of potential applicants already there waiting. You need to be one of the applicants. Spend time looking into the potential employers that are out there, and use the time to contact them directly. Emailing over your resume and asking to be made aware of opportunities shows initiative. For example, is you always wanted to be a lawyer, you have to look for legal jobs and see if you have the right skills to work in this field.

Networking is a great idea

The chances are, if you are looking to change your career the industry or sector it is in will have some sort of national conference or expo you can attend. This is the perfect time to network and get yourself in front of potential new employers. It will not only give you the chance to make some new connections and contacts, but you could gain some valuable knowledge in the process. It is definitely worth the investment of a ticket price.

Changing your career is never an easy task but with determination, you can achieve everything that you ever dreamed of and even more!
