10 Mental Health Benefits of a Clean Kitchen

I don't know if you've noticed, but during the quarantine, people started to de-clutter and clean their homes more than usual. Have you ever wondered why that happened? It's not like all of a sudden, everyone decided to get rid of their stuff, or like they lived all their life in a filthy home, no.

Our environment has a greater effect on us than we may think and it's been proven that a tidy home has amazing benefits for our mental health, so with that in mind, I think it's pretty easy to understand the reason why cleaning is so important.

Now, I don't know about you but I sure feel a difference in my mood depending on how my house looks like. If I didn't have enough time to clean and things get messy, I'm stressed, my anxiety levels go through the rough and things go bad. On the other side, if I organize my tasks well and my house is clean I am calm and relaxed. Pretty weird right?

One of the rooms that I give special attention to when I clean is the kitchen. The kitchen isn't called the soul of the house for nothing you know. It's the place where we cook, where we eat, where we sometimes gather around as a family to talk about our day, so it's only normal that it's kept in a neat condition.

In simple terms, a clean and organized kitchen plays a vital role in creating a comfortable and lively atmosphere and boasts of multiple mental health benefits, including:

1. Relieve stress

Like I mentioned before, I feel very stressed and unhappy when my kitchen is messy. I always start the week with a well-organized and clean kitchen but as the days go by it gets messier and messier. Does it happen to you too? I am aware that's a normal thing but still, that doesn't o anything to my stress levels. But when I clean the kitchen thoroughly I simply feel the stress diminishing, the air is different and I feel ten times better. You should try it, it's life-changing!

2. Minimising family fighting

If your kitchen is messy you won't be the only one who will feel the stress and anxiety, your family will feel that too. Objects will be misplaced and that will cause irritation, the kids will leave their stuff everywhere because that's what kids do and usually if they see a room is messier, they won't have any regret doing that.
With a proper cleaning process and routine, you can minimize fights within your family, ease down the tension and organize things in a better way.

3. Boosts productivity

A messy kitchen can divert your mind and can make you feel anxious. So, it is good to establish a daily cleaning routine to make your living space look sparkling clean without any distractions. On the other side, a tidy kitchen produces positive energy and allows you to perform other activities with more dedication and a relaxed mind.

4. Builds social confidence

I know that social gatherings aren't happening that much, or at all lately but do you remember the times when you could receive guests in your home and just how great it felt to have your kitchen clean? The cleanliness aspect within your premises helps you gain social confidence and leave a great impression on your friends and family.

5. Better sleep

Don't you feel better when you know everything is done, the dishes are washed, the cupboards are clean and everything is at its place? Me too! It's a sense of accomplishment and to be honest, it feels amazing to wake up the next day and drink the first cup of coffee in a clean kitchen rather than a messy one.

6. Good for your body and mind

According to researchers, people with clean and organized homes seem more happy, active and healthy. If you don't have enough time to go to the gym, don't worry. The activities involved in cleaning a house not only give you peace of mind but also keeps you physically fit. You can work the upper part of your body when you're scrubbing the cupboards and the lower part when you're cleaning the floor
In order to get the floor extra clean and hygienic,  I like to use a vax steamer. It's super easy to use and I know that my floor will be germ free.

7. You can feel in control

You can't beat the being in control feeling. By cleaning, you are in control to turn something that can cause anxiety and stress into something that you can easily be proud of.

8. Helps with meditation & mindfulness

A clean and clutter-free kitchen reduces your anxiety level and allows you to focus on the present things without any distractions. Practicing mindfulness is the perfect way to encourage our minds to relax and unwind, enabling us to think more calmly and clearly.

9. Learning new organization skills

Just when you think you know everything about organization, a new tip or trick comes out and you wonder how come you didn't think of that before. We learn each day something new and it's the same thing when it comes to cleaning.
I always take the time one time per week to check everything and try to organize as best as possible. I find it very calming to know exactly where everything is when I need it.

10. Cleaning is the best therapy
